Decarbonisation in Global Steel Production: Meta-Analysis

Case Studies

The Brief

Our client required an understanding about the future of sustainable steelmaking and decarbonisation strategies being implemented by major steelmakers throughout the world. We also provided detailed analysis about downstream customers and their positioning in relation to net zero commitments and sustainable steel procurement in the near, medium and long-term.

The approach

Meta-analysis was conducted using a range of sources, including company websites, sustainability reports, financial/annual reports, industry reports, market analyses, social media, and much more. Once sourced, the information was collated, analysed, and summarised into a detailed report, incorporating a macro-analysis of the industry and deep dives into competitors and other key stakeholder groups.

The challenge

The sheer volume of information available on the topic required a strict knowledge management process to ensure when information was obtained, it was quickly validated, categorised and stored. Generative AI was used a key resource to assist in all parts of this process. In line with many of the global projects we conduct, it was also important to use industry experts and contacts to validate information when exploring regions such as China and the Middle East.

The insight

The research identified key insights about global decarbonisation in the steel industry and the journey being undertaken by steelmakers and downstream customers to achieve net zero by 2050. The research demonstrated a strong intent by all stakeholders to trial and implement a wide range of low-carbon technologies and techniques including hydrogen-based technologies powered using renewable energy.

The outcome

Our client will use the research to inform strategic planning and decision-making processes, ensuring it is not only aligned with global sustainability trends but maintains a frontrunner position in the transition towards sustainable steel production.
