Building the Energy Transition Workforce

Case Studies

The Brief

Our client is a leading road, rail and infrastructure company in Australia, and is tendering for multiple energy transition projects across the country. These projects are in regional areas and thus require a FIFO/DIDO workforce, that is prepared to work rosters throughout the project lifecycle. Therefore, it is crucial for the company to develop a robust Employee Value Proposition (EVP), to attract and retain skilled professionals and ensure the successful delivery of these significant projects.

The approach

The research aimed to understand workforce expectations around salaries, benefits, work schedules, and camp facilities for FIFO/DIDO workers in the energy transition and adjacent sectors. Accordingly, Fifth Quadrant conducted secondary research using various sources, including government employment data, industry associations, and social media.

The challenge

Along with dealing with a substantial amount of information, we were seeking information on niche occupations in relatively small geographic areas. As such, finding accurate information on factors like salaries and benefits was challenging. Generative AI was used as a key resource to assist in all parts of this process, from ensuring timely validation and categorisation of information, to helping identify sources.

The insight

The research revealed that competitive compensation, including higher salaries, were essential but insufficient on their own. Workers also valued flexible rosters, high-quality camp accommodations, and mental health and wellbeing initiatives.

The outcome

Our client will use the insights to enhance its EVP, taking key factors such as compensation and benefits, roster preferences, FIFO/DIDO camp innovations, and health and wellbeing initiatives into account. Ultimately, this research will support our client in delivering energy transition projects over the coming decades, by ensuring it can attract and retain the workforce required.
